Property Description

You could say that James Tyler got his schooling here in Utah, and his education working in Los Angeles. He’s a former student of John Sugden, and worked under him while in Salt Lake, before going on to become the design director for Craig Elwood in California. You can see the Miesian influence from John in the homes James designed in the Golden State. His work with Elwood would come to be a success most architects could only dream of. Later, following his departure from Elwood, he became a master in his own right. In the same year this home was built, James started his own firm and joined the USC faculty. (He went on to design some of LA’s notable homes and buildings, such as the ultra iconic Art Center in Pasadena.) It was 1977, and while Salt Lake was still a small city, Sandy City felt like a distant land. The engineering company happened to be in Los Angeles, so they completed all of the engineering for this home, knowing only the town of Alta and the ski resort with its namesake. They took the ski resort snow load and thought that was precisely what this home needed. Originally, the home had vertical redwood siding that ran from indoor to outdoor, capped off at every corner with floor-to-ceiling windows. Like a series of boxes tapering in, the home appears almost arrow-like from above. Each box delineates a space, with the garage on one end, and the public spaces situated all the way on the other end. The outdoor space is part of your life here, fully immersing you in the seasons. Summertime is filled with the sound of crickets in the evenings and frequent visits from squirrels and deer. Sitting on two acres of wooded forrest, this home is sited to offer the privacy of, and intimacy with nature. From any room, the corner windows look out into the natural world. A circular driveway that sits under a cover of pines and aspens, leads you to a serene modern structure. This is a wonderful home that’s ready for someone to love as much as the current owner does. Remember, just trees, and breathe………
